South Florida Siberian Husky Rescue Inc. Calls On Community To Vote For Group In Efforts To
Win $10k From Care2
Prize and other winnings to help animal shelter or rescue group bring more services and awareness to animals in need
Lauderhill, FL, Date - South Florida Siberian Husky Rescue Inc. has the opportunity to win $10,000 with local community support. Care2's "America's Favorite Animal Shelter" contest will award voters' favorite local animal shelter or rescue group the grand prize, which will go a long way to help SFSHRI to provide care to homeless dogs.
Care2 (www.care2.com), the largest online community of people passionate about making a difference, is holding the contest with Adopt-a-Pet.com to bring public awareness about the plight of homeless dogs and cats, as well as recognize animal shelters and rescue groups for their outstanding efforts in animal welfare.
In addition to the grand prize, Care2 is awarding $3,000, $1,000 and two prizes of $500 to the four runner-ups respectively. The winner of the contest is determined by its local citizens and supporters, who can vote for their shelter or group by going to http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest/73957/. At this site, people can also invite their friends (via email) to vote for that same favorite shelter.
The contest aims to raise awareness about the importance of supporting pet adoptions and taking action to save homeless animals' lives. All participating animal shelters and rescue groups, including SFSHRI, are part of the Adopt-a-Pet.com network.
SFSHRI has seen an increase in abandoned animals, increase in cost of care, and decrease in charitable giving, in the past year. The grand price of $10,000 would help SFSHRI, to care for these abused and abandoned dogs, as well as bring in future donations.
"We commend groups, like SFSHRI, which support the welfare of animals," said Randy Paynter, CEO and founder of Care2. "We are excited to work with Adopt-a-Pet.com's network of shelters and rescue groups to support a cause that really matters to our members and so many others - the welfare and adoption of animals."
"Ten thousand dollars would make a huge impact on the kinds of support we can provide to our animals," said Phill Congleton, Fundraising Coordinator, South Florida Siberian Husky Rescue Inc. "We encourage all of our local supporters and citizens to visit the web site and vote for us."
How The Contest Works:
The contest runs from September 22, 2008 through November 1, 2008 on Care2.com's website. Anyone can simply go to http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest and vote for their favorite shelter or rescue group. The shelter or group that receives the most votes nationwide wins the grand prize of $10,000.
Additionally, Care2 is giving away a total of $5,000 to the next four groups with the highest votes. And Adopt-a-Pet.com is awarding prizes of $1,000 at random each week during the contest period to ensure every shelter and rescue group has a chance to win, providing SFSHRI another opportunity to support its causes.
Shelter supporters can also invite their friends and encourage them to vote for SFSHRI. The results of votes for shelters and groups are updated in real-time. The 20 people who recruit the most friends to vote will receive a $50 gift certificate sponsored by Adopt-a-Pet.com. Visitors can keep track of who has recruited the most people to vote for their favorite shelters at http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest/73957.

I would like to warn all dog lovers out there to be very careful about the dog treats that you give your dogs. Last week I bought a "Real Ham Bone" made by Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri from Walmart. The label says it is made with "100% Food Grade Ingredients" and it isn't made from China. I thought that meant that this would make a good treat for my dogs. Boy was I wrong.
Trace, my dog, enjoyed chewing on this bone. It did not splinter or anything, in fact there is quite a large piece of it still left. Then in the evening she started vomiting. She spent the next day at a veterinarian' s office where she was diagnosed with a blockage of the colon. That night she endured a 4 hour surgery at Brandon Veterinary Specialists where the vet picked out small round pellets of the bone, up to the size of about a b-b. The next morning she was moved to Florida Veterinary Specialist critical care unit. Again in the evening she had another 2 hour surgery, because the blockage had caused poison in her body. She passed away at 4:30 the next afternoon.
Everyone who hears this horrible story immediately says "Well that sounds like a lawsuit to me". That is what I thought also. Since then, I have learned that is not that easy to sue on behalf of a dog. The lawyers say a dog is a possession just like a couch. So, so far, all I have been able to do is write a certified letter to Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri. In it I requested my vet bills to be paid and their product to be relabeled or preferably removed from the shelf. I don't know if I will get a response. If anyone else has any ideas about how I may address this issue, please let me know at djurgens12@aol. com.
In the memory of Trace, please pass this email on to all of the dog lovers that you know. This type of bone is sold in all of the stores under several different manufacturers names. I would assume they all may do the same thing. Even if they don't splinter, they can cause a blockage.
